With mushrooms sprouting, pet owners urged to take care

Some mushrooms can be dangerous for pets

New Hampshire’s rainy July has meant a lot of mushrooms are popping up, prompting warnings for pet owners.

Mushroom farmers said the Northeast as a whole is seeing an uptick of the fungus because of all the recent rain. Many mushrooms are poisonous, and veterinarians at Rockingham Emergency Veterinary Hospital said at least five cases of mushroom toxicity have come in over the past several weeks.

All the dogs survived, but two were hospitalized for several days.

Mushrooms are difficult to identify, and it’s hard to know which ones are poisonous.

“Keep a really close eye on your pet in your yard,” said veterinarian Christina Barnett. “Walk your yard every day and pull every single mushroom that you can find.”

Symptoms of mushroom toxicity can depend on how many mushrooms a dog eats and the size of the animal, but veterinarians said they typically experience gastrointestinal and neurological issues.
